Beliefs & Obstacles By Scott Dorrofield Do your limiting beliefs need a reality check? As a business coach a part of my job is to discern who is coachable and who is not. A client who cannot see, and will not acknowledge, his limiting beliefs stays disempowered. A person who cannot see that his thoughts (beliefs) are equal to what he/she experiences in life will find it too difficult to take new action. As a coach this is soul destroying because I KNOW that everybody who walks into my office has unlimited potential. We all do, even if our results don’t always reflect that.People who are uncoachable have what we might call, for want of a better term, victim mentalities. A victim is a person who is at the mercy of circumstance and chance. They desperately want change but they want the world around them to do all the work, they want the world to change. And, they spend A LOT of energy letting the world know that…The irony is this; until we wake up from our zombie like state it is true that we are not responsible (unable to respond). When we are unaware of our power and deny our potential, we are unable to take affirmative action. We’ll remain unaware of our limiting belief, unable to see and change our thoughts. We must first wake up and see the proverbial wizard behind the curtain and catch him pulling the strings. Then, and only then, can we see that it is our unconscious limiting beliefs that cripple our progress.Only when we see the ghost in the machine can we interject our will into the thought process. Now we're able to change our behavior through new choices and become captain and navigator of our own journey. we are coachable. Why Can Positive People Fail? What if you’re a positive and enthusiastic person and you still don’t get the results you want?!It’s our nature to only invest energy into that which we believe will produce the outcome we seek. When we believe something is not going to work out – even unconsciously – we sabotage our potential by taking half-assed action. Weak action equals inferior results.Repeatedly producing unconvincing results breeds insecurity and leads to discouragement. If this occurs often enough beliefs of powerlessness are reinforced... It is a vicious cycle that only ends when you decide to change what you’re putting into the system. How Beliefs & Limiting Beliefs are ReinforcedThe diagram below outlines the keys to success, working as a system. The more resolved the beliefs we have about achieving something, the more potential we will tap. With greater conviction and confidence comes greater action. Greater actions give us more feedback. We accelerate our personal development when we see feedback, not failure.Every time we get feedback around our efforts we must decide how we will think about it. Decisions create new beliefs. New beliefs lead to new actions. New actions create new opportunities. Potential. Action. Beliefs. Feedback. Decision. Alone, each one of these words is self explanatory. When we put them together to make a success cycle we see beliefs in a potentially more creative light. Empowering beliefs spiral us up energetically whereas limiting beliefs reverse this flow and spiral us down. However, if we’re not careful the success cycle will also work in reverse. Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. "Whoever has shall be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them."Matthew 13:12 Click to Tweet When do Beliefs Start to Change?A belief, even a limiting belief, is a feeling of certainty about what something means. The problem is this; most of our beliefs were unconsciously created by our decisions about what past experiences meant. But the past does not dictate the present – unless you continue to live there. Our minds work in such a way that we can find experiences to back up almost any belief. The key to countering this tendency is to make sure that we are consciously aware of the beliefs we are creating. If your beliefs don’t empower you, change them. Will your limiting beliefs be the reason you stop taking action towards life goals? Will your limiting beliefs prevent you from taking new actions? Or, will you change them into the ultimate opportunity to create something extraordinary. What New Beliefs Will You Create? Are you ready to awake to the thoughts that shape your every action? What are you going to transform; yourself, your career or your family?
